Two days long Great Valley Energy Summit II, organized by Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Energy in collaboration with Etico Corporation took place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia October 23 and 24, 2013 at Hilton Hotel,

In the opening session, H.E Ato Alemayehu Tegenu, minister, Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Energy briefed the participants saying that energy is one of the fundamental and strategic issues that have been demanding much attention and resources of governments in our region.

The impact of the continuing upsurges of price of oil in the international market is increasingly challenging the economies of non oil producing sub-Saharan African countries in general and Ethiopia in particular.

Population growth, increasing intensive economic activity and the prevalence of low level energy efficiency and the resulting environmental consequences, makes it necessary to devise adequate and strategically sustainable response to counter balance and abate the negative impacts.

Alemayehu has also said that collaborative efforts with multiple stakeholders are highly needed to enhancing energy security and tackle the consequences that would result from lack of energy. In this regard, he says, Africa needs to embrace strategies and strengthen the energy institutions with variety of capacities. World-class international events whereby decision makers and business organizations come together are necessary for better activities of the energy sector, he added.

The Summit participants were Energy ministers with the high level delegates who are drawn from 11 Great Valley countries, delegates from regional and international institutions, private financial and industrial companies, consulting firms, manufacture?? stakeholders in the development of the region?? infrastructure, energy sector experts, technology suppliers, engineering and construction equipment suppliers, internationally known investors and NOGs, with an aim of heralding the introduction of geothermal as an alternative source of energy in the sector.
