Summit II, organized by Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Energy in collaboration
with Etico Corporation took place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia October 23 and 24,
2013 at Hilton Hotel,
In the opening
session, H.E Ato Alemayehu Tegenu, minister, Ministry of Water, Irrigation and
Energy briefed the participants saying that energy is one of the fundamental and
strategic issues that have been demanding much attention and resources of
governments in our region.
The impact of the continuing upsurges
of price of oil in the international market is increasingly challenging the
economies of non oil producing sub-Saharan African countries in general and
Ethiopia in particular.
Population growth, increasing
intensive economic activity and the prevalence of low level energy efficiency
and the resulting environmental consequences, makes it necessary to devise
adequate and strategically sustainable response to counter balance and abate
the negative impacts.
Alemayehu has also said that
collaborative efforts with multiple stakeholders are highly needed to enhancing
energy security and tackle the consequences that would result from lack of
energy. In this regard, he says, Africa needs to embrace strategies and
strengthen the energy institutions with variety of capacities. World-class
international events whereby decision makers and business organizations come
together are necessary for better activities of the energy sector, he
The Summit participants were Energy
ministers with the high level delegates who are drawn from 11 Great Valley
countries, delegates from regional and international institutions, private
financial and industrial companies, consulting firms, manufacture??
stakeholders in the development of the region?? infrastructure, energy sector
experts, technology suppliers, engineering and construction equipment
suppliers, internationally known investors and NOGs, with an aim of heralding
the introduction of geothermal as an alternative source of energy in the sector.
